Graphic Novel: Sophie the One-Eyed Cat Vol 1. Review

I have an undeniable love for cats. As a proud owner of two (former stray) cats, I’m always fascinated by their quirks, personalities, and the little things they do that make me laugh. There’s something magical about the way cats move, their curious glances, and even the quiet moments when they simply sit beside you. When I got the chance to read Saphie: The One-Eyed CatI was beyond excited! The story seemed like it would capture the heart and charm of cats, and I couldn’t wait to dive in. Life has been busy with school, but once I found a free moment to pick up this book, I felt instantly relaxed, lost in a world that was all about the animals I love.

Saphie: The One-Eyed Cat art style is incredibly cute and suits the story perfectly. It’s simple yet expressive, bringing out the personality of each character with every panel. This isn’t a complex or heavy read, it’s just right for anyone looking for a moment of light-hearted fun or a quick escape. There’s a diary-like feel to the story, with each chapter presenting short, quirky glimpses into the cats’ lives, almost like small snapshots of their day-to-day experiences. The story made me wonder what my own cats might be thinking as they go about their day. This is the first time a book has truly made me pause and think about how my cats might see the world and maybe even see me.

One of the things I loved most about this Saphie: The One-Eyed Cat is how it captures the unique personalities of the cats and shows their relationships with each other and with other animals. Often, stories about animals tend to make them overly dramatic or unrealistic, but here, the cats interact in simple and silly ways that feel genuine and true to their nature. I especially enjoyed seeing the sibling-like bond between the cats in the story. You can sense their affection for each other and the way they look out for one another, which is both heartwarming and relatable for anyone who has seen animals form close bonds.

I really loved how the story shows the love the cats have for their owner. There’s a special warmth in the way the cats are portrayed, their loyalty and attachment to their humans come across subtly but beautifully. It’s a reminder of the quiet yet profound bond that can form between people and their pets.

Saphie: The One-Eyed Cat is an adorable, heartfelt story that truly understands the charm and spirit of cats. It’s a light read that provides joy and comfort, perfect for anyone who loves animals. If you’re a cat lover like me or just someone looking for a story that’s warm, cute, and charming, I’d highly recommend giving this graphic novel a try. It’s a delightful book that celebrates everything wonderful about cats, and it leaves you smiling, perhaps wondering a bit more about the secret lives of your own pets.

Saphie: The One-Eyed Cat Vol. 1 physical print

Unlike many graphic novels, which sometimes end a volume abruptly or on a cliffhanger, this one concluded in a satisfying way. The episode chosen to close the volume felt complete and well thought out, and I didn’t feel left hanging, as I often do with other books. It’s refreshing to finish a volume and feel content rather than frustrated or eager for answers.

Volume one, published by Scholastic, Saphie: The One-Eyed Cat contains episodes 1 to 42. You can read Sophie the One-Eyed Cat on WEBTOONS. This story ended with 530 episodes (and an afterword).
